The Licking County Historical Society

Robbins-Hunter Museum

The nationally acclaimed Greek Revival house was built in 1842 by Alfred Avery, one of the founders of Granville Ohio. The house was added to over the years and now has 27 rooms of which 14 are open to the public.

A private residence until 1903, it passed through several branches of the Avery family. The Averys, Spelmans, Downers, and the Coles all made it their home. From 1903 to 1956, the house served the Phi Gamma Delta and the Kappa Sigma fraternities of Denison University.

It was purchased in 1956 by Robbins Hunter, a noted Licking County historian. He made it his residence and operated his antique business in it. Upon his death in 1979, he made provisions in his will for the LCHS to convert it into a museum. The museum opened in August of 1981 and is still undergoing restoration and rehabilitation.

The rooms contain displays of 18th and 19th century American and European furniture and decorative arts, paintings and sculptures, Oriental rugs, clocks, silver and china. Some of the Spelman-Downer artifacts have been returned by their descendants.
